Sarajevo Meeting of Cultures (SMOC), within the implementation of the Erasmus+ project EPIC – Empowering Entrepreneurial Citizenship for Social Change, organised and implemented a two-day hackathon in the field of social entrepreneurship, held from 20 to 21 December in cooperation with Homework Hub, where the event took place.
The hackathon brought together over 40 young participants, including high school pupils and students from various faculties, who demonstrated strong motivation to engage in the development of social entrepreneurial ideas. During two intensive days of work, participants developed and presented a total of 12 ideas, covering a wide range of fields—from physical and mental health, through eco-based solutions, to IT innovations and initiatives aimed at community well-being.
One of the key challenges of the hackathon was bridging the gap between humanitarian work and profit-oriented companies, and developing ideas that combine a clear social mission with a sustainable business model. With continuous mentoring support from SMOC and Homework Hub, young participants demonstrated a high level of research, planning, and teamwork, confirming that social entrepreneurship represents a realistic and applicable model for social change.
The event was further enriched by a professional jury composed of representatives from the education sector (secondary schools and universities), as well as the private and public sectors, ensuring diverse perspectives and an objective evaluation of the ideas. Although all ideas demonstrated exceptional potential, the winning idea was “Inner Peace”, developed by a team of students from the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education, University of Sarajevo. This social entrepreneurial initiative successfully combines the promotion of physical and mental health with a sustainable business model, with a clear focus on benefits for the local community and society as a whole.
SMOC encourages all participants to continue developing their ideas—some with the mentoring support of SMOC and Homework Hub, and others within their educational institutions. This hackathon represents an important milestone within the EPIC project, as well as the beginning of a broader process of empowering young people in the field of social entrepreneurship.
In the coming period, SMOC will, once again in cooperation with Homework Hub, organise the final EPIC conference, where the results of the project will be presented, along with the best social entrepreneurial ideas from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and Kosovo. Social entrepreneurship and good ideas know no boundaries, and our shared goal is to encourage young people to think not only locally, but also regionally.
We would like to thank all participants, mentors, and partners who shared with us their passion for social change.
